Healing comes from genuine and considerate care.

Recently, a new patient visited our practice, still suffering after visits to other caregivers, both medical and holistic.

During a complete examination here, he told me of his experiences searching for relief from his pain. According to this patient, during a visit to a chiropractor in another town, he felt as if he were anonymous and incidental. His treatment there consisted of only five or ten minutes of massage by a doctor's assistant, followed by a doctor's examination of no more than two minutes.

I am proud of the chiropractic community. I know many fine D.C.'s and medical doctors, locally and throughout the country. But that patient's experience is not acceptable, nor is it any way to find relief from injury.

At Lehmann Chiropractic, a new patient with a specific physical complaint can expect an exam, history, and treatment of up to two hours on their first visit. That time in our office may not seem expedient, but I am convinced that only a very thorough initial session, and an open relationship with the patient, can point the way to better health. How can I get to know you in just a few minutes? And, just as importantly, how can you become comfortable with me in such a short time?

It's common for return visits to be needed in order to solve a patient's problem. But comprehensive first visits lead to far shorter return visits (our average is less than 25 minutes) and less of those visits. Our goal is the same as yours: To return you to great health as quickly as possible.

Another key point of quality chiropractic care is the value of routine adjustments. Many of our patients make regular appointments even though they feel great. That's because they, like us, believe that routinely receiving preventative chiropractic care is as valuable and logical as annual medical check-ups and dental visits.

And in circumstances where care is needed beyond the scope of our practice, I routinely refer patients to medical specialists.

Like my father did during his many years in our office, I want to know my patients and their bodies, so I can care for both. My staff and I have the highest standards for thorough and candid care. We treat with kindness. We care, and we're careful. We solve problems… We don't prolong them.

Thank you for visiting our website, and I look forward to seeing you at Lehmann Chiropractic Center.

Dr. Leonard Lehmann, who practiced for over fifty years, started our practice in 1946. "Dr. Leonard" was the 1974 and 1975 Ohio State Chiropractor of the Year, and also served for many years as the Treasurer of the Ohio State Applied Kinesiology Association.

Since 1952, our practice has been located on West Tiffin Street in Fostoria in a beautifully restored home.

Dr. Steven D. Lehmann graduated from the National College of Chiropractic in Chicago, where he received the Clinical Achievement Award as the most outstanding intern of his class.

"Dr. Steven" returned to his hometown and joined his father's practice in 1989. In 1990, Dr Leonard decided he was ready for semi-retirement and proudly handed the reigns to Dr. Steven. At the age of 75, Dr. Leonard finally fully retired following 50 years of chiropractic practice.

His first patient as a licensed physician came to Dr. Steven at a local high school football game. An injured player left the game after a first quarter injury, and soon couldn't walk, suffering from severe pain. At half time, Dr. Lehmann was summoned to help. He adjusted the player during the intermission, and the player returned to the team's sidelines. Soon, the student-athlete was back on the field, where he finished the game with his teammates. The team went on to play in the state championship game that season.

Since that first emergency adjustment, Dr. Steven, after a year of post-graduate studies, became one of the first 500 chiropractors worldwide to be a board eligible for the title Chiropractic Sports Physician. He was also one of the first chiropractors to complete a 300-hour post-doctorate Chiropractic Rehabilitation Specialist program. Dr. Steven is one of only a few chiropractors certified to perform : A specialized type of treatment that is performed with a surgical team in either a hospital setting or out-patient surgery center.

A member of the American Chiropractic Association for over 20 years, as well as the Ohio State Chiropractic Association, Dr. Steven is currently a District Director of OSCA (and past District Director Of The Year) and serves on the Executive Committee. He is also a past Distinguished President of the local chapter of Kiwanis International and an active member.

Since 2001, Lehmann Chiropractic Center has included a Licensed Massage Therapist. Dr. Lehmann employs up-to-date rehabilitation and physio-therapeutics to ensure your speedy recovery.

Today, the practice works closely with local medical physicians and commonly receives referrals from family doctors and specialists throughout Northwest Ohio.

Massage, the physical manipulation of soft tissue (such as muscles, skin, and tendons) is an ancient therapy going back as many as 3,000 years. It's also a proven means of relief for our patients suffering from tension and stress. Regular massage sessions will improve your overall health, just like chiropractic treatment. This reduces fatigue and stress, while improving circulation. And circulatory health is highly beneficial for the whole body.

It's been our experience that if massage is done first, followed then by chiropractic adjustment, the patient feels longer-lasting results and has a better treatment experience.

Patients who may already be receiving care from another massage therapist and visit our clinic for chiropractic adjustment are welcome to maintain their prior relationship.

Many insurances and Workers' Compensation cover massages done in a Chiropractic office. Ask our insurance manager to check your health insurance policy for your eligibility.

Full body massages have an appreciable effect over regional specific massages. The overall full body massage is always better for your body, since stress and toxins can manifest themselves in almost any region and do not always announce their presence through chronic pain.

Patients who regularly receive a full-body massage report:

  • Reduced tension
  • Better sleep
  • Healthier skin
  • Easier weight loss
  • More energy

A full-body massage is a longer session, and we know that sometimes 30 minutes is all the time that patients have for a massage. Our therapist can customize your full body massage into a 30 minute visit, still covering all crucial body parts, and you won't feel that the session is rushed.

Massage is an accepted part of many rehabilitation programs, and a key remedy in many chronic health problems such as:

  • Back pain
  • Arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Diabetes
  • Tendonitis
  • Blood pressure
  • Immuno-suppression
  • Depression

Many first-time patients have a lot of questions about chiropractic care. Lehmann Chirporactic encourages you to speak up: Ask the doctor or massage therapist about anything you like.

Your Question

Q: How often should a person who does not have chronic pain visit the Chiropractic Center?

A: Personally, I have been receiving chiropractic care at least once a month since I was 15. Research shows that monthly chiropractic care limits degenerative processes and maintains a healthy immune system as well as providing other somatic results. There are some chronic pain sufferers that can't last 2 to 3 weeks without care. When we talk about your health, you are a consumer. You can either take allopathic medications and pills to cover up a problem or you can attack the cause of the symptoms with chiropractic adjustment.

Q: Does insurance cover my visit?

A: Most insurance plans cover chiropractic in some forms. Certain employers will place limits on the care, the cost, or treat chiropractors as specialists. Our insurance manager will more than be happy to help you determine what your insurance will and will not cover.

Q: Do you recommend braces for patients?

A: Yes, though our first aim is always to ease your pain without the use of an artificial support device. No one enjoys wearing a brace, but some injuries or pain sources are much more quickly alleviated with support devices. I don't recommend a brace for every patient and every condition.

Q: Do you offer nutritional supplements and herbs?

A: Yes. Many patients will benefit from including supplements and herbs in their diet. At Lehmann Chiropractic Center, we offer a complete, science-based solution to a patient's pain and consider a variety of safe healing methods. The formulas within each bottle of dietary supplement or herbal remedy that we recommend come from only the best labs and companies. I was very pleased when I started to compare the products I offer with those of store-bought vitamins. The difference is startling. Sometimes you do get what you pay for.

Q: Do you treat children?

A: Yes! Most of the kids we see here are seeking relief for conditions that are often common in kids. Chiropractic has been found to be 96% effective in treating infantile cholic. Ear infections are also effectively treated by chiropractic. Scoliosis, certain types of asthma, bed-wetting, and postural alterations from falls or everyday activities are treated with success by chiropractic care.

Q: Can pregnant women safely receive chiropractic care?

A: They certainly can. In fact, chiropractic is so safe that it's one of the few treatments pregnant woman can opt for and not worry about side effects. We're usually treating 2 or 3 pregnant women at any given time. My office has specialized tables that drop down giving room for a pregnant woman's belly allowing her to lay face down.

Q: Do you order x-rays or can you do MRIs?

A: We have the ability to take x-rays in our office, but I do not x-ray every patient unless it is necessary for diagnosis and proper treatment. There are several hospitals and outpatient imaging facilities that allow my office to refer for CT or bone scans, blood work, MRIs, and diagnostic ultrasounds.

Q: How long will my visit take?

A: The initial visit at our office is usually 90 minutes to 2 hours. A single adjustment will probably not decrease the inflammatory phase that many people are experiencing at the time of their first visit. But the good news is that follow-up treatments usually take only 10 to 25 minutes.

Q: Why do I have to come back?

A: Most of the time, the reason for continued chiropractic care is that tissue healing and inflammatory responses to injury have specific timelines. Sometimes, healing just takes repetitive careful adjustment. My goal is to expedite that response, but that fact remains that as a physician I can only hurry it so much, otherwise, there could be new damage. Also, in order to reposition the spine, each adjustment moves the vertebrae only a small distance – often less than a millimeter. I compare realigning the spine to wearing braces on your teeth. You don't have braces placed on your teeth on Monday and have a perfect smile on Tuesday, right? Dental braces, which require regular tightening, and chiropractic adjustments both need time and continued care to be effective.

Q: Is it best to get a chiropractic adjustment before or after my massage?

A: Our clinic's massage therapist, Lou Ann Brandeberry, LMT, answers this one: "Our experience has been that if a patient receives a one-hour massage followed by skilled chiropractic care, the improvement experienced by the patient is significant, in comparison to patients who get adjustments on different days or ask for a massage after chiropractic care. Those patients feel improvement but their pain management may not quite meet their expectations."

The single most common question put to anyone in our profession: Why should I choose chiropractic care?

Maybe the best short answer is 'because it works'.

Dr. Lehmann believes that preventative and recuperative chiropractic adjustments are an essential ingredient in a comfortable, healthy lifestyle. Treatment and prevention of disorders in the musculoskeletal system, as chiropractic is often defined, joins proper nutrition, exercise, awareness of mental health, and massage as components of a great life.

But talking about chiropractic care, a practice that has been with us since the 1890s, is not something we shy away from at Lehmann Chiropractic. Take a few mnutes to learn more about 'chiro' from the information on this page.

Chiropractic care helps the body function correctly. Your brain, spinal cord, and the rest of your nerves control every aspect of your body. In chiropractic, we maintain that imbalances in your spine will cause an adverse effect to your overall health. If chiropractic care starts at birth, you can achieve a higher level of health and wellness throughout life, and do so naturally.

Dr. Lehmann is not only a Doctor of Chiropractic, but the child of a chiropractor, and has received adjustments his whole life, regardless of injury. So he can attest to the benefits of a lifetime of care.

We do more than just fix bad backs... We help whole families.

Chiropractic care has been helping families have vital lives for well over 100 years. Vitality expression is the result of a properly aligned spine, a healthy lifestyle, and a positive mental attitude. Chiropractic is the best choice for family vitality in the new millennium. Families want safe and natural health care solutions. More and more people are choosing Chiropractic care first, because it makes good sense: it's non-invasive and there is no dependence on chemicals. Few other forms of health care are safer while being effective.

On the job, on the track, on the court, or anywhere, chiropractic improves human performance. Olympic athletes all over the world have relied on chiropractic care to help them reach their potential since the 1970s. Professional athletes have known it even longer. And fifty years ago or more, our clinic's founder, Dr. Leonard Lehmann, even treated the circus performers who visited our area. Chiropractic patients experience a higher level of performance and stamina in all areas of life, as their bodies function optimally from the inside out.

Our lives are a direct result of the decisions we make. Good health is not a given, so we have to make decisions every day that protect our bodies. But things like poorly designed office chairs, worn-out mattresses, or long airplane flights adversely affect the body of even the most health-conscious person. Odds are high that you are 'out of alignment' even as you read this.

Chiropractic improves the quality of your life by relieving unnatural contortions and pressure through manual adjustment. Regular adjustments leave patients feeling better more often. They're happier, they have more energy, and more restful nights. Helping you maximize your health is always the goal of Chiropractic.

Chiropractic is the third largest health care profession in America. Most Doctors of Chiropractic go through a college pre-medicine program, receive a bachelor's degree, then commit to a 5 year chiropractic studies program leading to a Doctorate in Chiropractic recognized by all 50 states as well as the prominent college licensing boards.

Doctors of Chiropractic actually receive training that exceeds medical doctors by 400 to 600 hours of study. D.C.s are "primary care physicians" because they are portal-of-entry doctors in the health care spectrum, and do not need a referral to begin treatment. Chiropractors do not prescribe medications or drugs and have been the drug free alternative to health for many decades now. Many long-standing chiropractic patients choose to see their chiropractor before seeing a medical doctor knowing that the chiropractor will gladly refer them to the correct doctor if they need one.

Many chiropractors use physical therapy machines, exercise machines, and rehab. This does not make them physical therapists. Physical therapists are a uniquely different profession and fill a niche that chiropractors do not. In most states, Physical Therapists need a doctor to make the referral for them to treat since they are not often portal-of-entry health care providers.

There's also a big difference in cost between chiropractors and physical therapists. Quite often, physical therapy treatments cost between $150 and $250 per session. When it comes to quality of care and affordability, no other health profession competes with chiropractic.

Manipulation Under Anesthesia, or MUA, is a procedure designed to improve the lost ranges of motion or joint restrictions which may be caused by fibrosis and scar tissue.

Fibrosis, or the development of excess connective tissue, is part of the normal healing process. But it may lead to scarring and joint restrictions if the healing takes place in an environment where the patient's range of motion is inhibited. In other words, fibrosis can be a real problem if the body is not carefully manipulated or stretched during healing. Some injuries, however, lead to pain so severe that the patient cannot bear chiropractic adjustment. This is where MUA comes in.

In MUA, a patient is placed under a twilight anesthetic. This prevents the patient from resisting manipulation due to pain.

MUA is not new. The first known published study regarding MUA was published in 1930. Originally, MUA was a common technique used not only by chiropractors, but by osteopaths and many orthopedic surgeons.

Chiropractors, who provide most manipulative treatments, have been restricted providing anesthesia. And in the past they did not typically have access to facilities where anesthetic services could be provided. So most chiropractors lost interest in the technique.

Beginning in the 1980s, though, there was a resurgence among chiropractors who began to perform MUA at select medical facilities.

Dr. Lehmann embraces MUA as an important option in complete treatment. Manipulations Under Anesthesia are performed in partnership with local hospitals. MUA is only recommended in specific cases, but the results have been very encouraging: 95% of MUA patients see results from the procedure.

If MUA has been recommended to you by another healthcare provider, please contact Lehmann Chiropractic for a consultation.

Dr. Steven Lehmann is a member of Lake Erie MUA, an association of Northwest Ohio Doctors of Chiropractic who are all experienced practitioners of Manipulation Under Anesthesia.

By sharing MUA experience, Lake Erie member doctors raise the level of success that they achieve from MUA procedures.

Dr. Lehmann has specialized in sports injuries since becoming head of Lehmann Chiropractic.

He finds that treating a sports injury is not much different from treating patients over 50. The process of inflammation is the same for someone who is 15 or 65, no matter the cause. The big difference is how quickly young athletes can respond to treatment.

Chiropractic care and massage is an ideal aid in recovery from the injuries found in contact sports, like football. But track athletes, tennis players, and gymnasts all suffer from muscle extension and the impact of their feet (and other body parts) on hard surfaces. Chiropractic care is a great way to bring your body back from the aftershocks of fun and games.

More than 3.5 million children ages 14 and under receive medical treatment for sports injuries each year.

Most organized sports related injuries (62 percent) occur during practices rather than games.

The rate and severity of sports-related injuries increases with age.

Children ages 5 to 14 account for nearly 40 percent of all sports-related injuries treated in hospital emergency departments.

Every year coaches, athletic directors, and parents send their athletes to our clinic, and, by now, we've done thousands of athletic physicals.

As a past all-state athlete and two-sport team captain, Dr. Lehmann has a real affinity for sports of all kinds, and understands the psyche of high school and college athletes (as well as weekend warriors). Active kids and adults are willing to trade the pain for the gain, but need help in recovering from their chosen activities.

We want you to excel in your sport, and we'll not only treat you thoroughly, but we'll also show you helpful exercises to add to your routine.
